The Cornerstone
is a lively community centre located in central Hove between First Avenue
and Church Road. The centre is based within the church of St John
the Baptist and is the result of a joint project between local residents
and the congregation of the church.
Work began in 1989 with the construction of a 3-floored building within the nave of the church. Since that early stage, the Cornerstone has grown considerably and it is now a very busy centre, which hosts over 50 groups a week. The Cornerstone is run by a management
committee, 3 paid staff and a team of dedicated volunteers.
Cornerstone mission
The centre aims to achieve this by 'identifying,
responding and adapting to changing local needs; promoting a safe environment
for groups and individuals; encouraging the involvement of marginalised
sectors of the local community; utilising and linking the church base with
wider secular and faith communities; assisting in the development of community
initiatives and opportunities for education, training and volunteering
for the local community.'
Activities at the Cornerstone
On the top floor anyone can enjoy classical
music and tranquility in our community cafe open 10am to 4pm from Monday
