The Cornerstone is a lively community centre located in central Hove between First Avenue and Church Road.  The centre is based within the church of St John the Baptist and is the result of a joint project between local residents and the congregation of the church.

Work began in 1989 with the construction of a 3-floored building within the nave of the church.  Since that early stage, the Cornerstone has grown considerably and it is now a very busy centre, which hosts over 50 groups a week.

The Cornerstone is run by a management committee, 3 paid staff and a team of dedicated volunteers.

Cornerstone mission
The Cornerstone Community Centre provides facilities for social and intellectual activities within Brunswick and Adelaide.

The centre aims to achieve this by 'identifying, responding and adapting to changing local needs; promoting a safe environment for groups and individuals; encouraging the involvement of marginalised sectors of the local community; utilising and linking the church base with wider secular and faith communities; assisting in the development of community initiatives and opportunities for education, training and volunteering for the local community.'

Activities at the Cornerstone
Our activities range from fitness classes like tai chi, yoga and pilates, to art classes and educational opportunities for adults such as E.S.O.L. classes, poetry and play reading groups.  The Cornerstone also provides accommodation for groups offering advice and advocacy services such as the Leaseholders Association, the 60+ Action Group and Hove Action for Peace.  During school time Amigos playgroup offers children's activities in a multi-cultural atmosphere to parents living in this area.

On the top floor anyone can enjoy classical music and tranquility in our community cafe open 10am to 4pm from Monday to Friday.

Volunteer opportunities
Volunteers run the reception area and the cafe and generally ensure that each day runs smoothly.

Office duties:
Volunteers respond to enquiries from the public in person and over the phone.  Volunteers' shifts are available between 9.30am to 9.30pm Monday to Saturday.  Get in touch if you are well organised, enjoy dealing with the public and have a few hours a week to spare.
Cafe duties:
Volunteers serve tea, coffee and snacks in a relaxed atmosphere.  You need to be available for a 3 hour session 10am to 1pm or 1pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

All volunteers will be reimbursed for travel expenses and the cost of your food if you are volunteering over meal times.
